According to the survey and book, I am classified as a New Coalition Democrat and Social Conservative, believing we as American citize ns are responsible to work hard to help the government get back on their feet, that everyone should be given the same opportunities no matter who they are, we should stick out immigrants they are not threatening us most come here to get away from conflict and I am religious.I take the side of John Locke when it comes to pro-government I believe in limited power to stop anarchy from happening but we as people need to have people in authority or there would be mass chaos. When all else failed, he had his daughter on whom he could fall back. His rationale was that he had given her life and the opportunity to roam the upstanding city selling bills, so he was entitled to some of her earnings occasionally. His expertise was indorsed in the inter-personal exchange when he visited Mr. Higgins to inquire about the wellbeing of his daughter. His real intention, though, was to get some money from Mr. Higgins.He was such an expert in effective encoding that he succeeded, not just in stopping Mr. Higgins from duty the Police, but in getting Mr. Higgins to offer ten pounds instead of the five that he wanted. . Mr. Doolittle had no bias against the rich. He accepted the difference in stance between himself, a poor dustman and Mr. Higgins, a professor. He was not intimidated by Mr. Higgins obviously superior status. Accustomed to living by his wits, he saw before him a man, of a different status, yes, but still a man. He acknowledged that he was one of the undeserving poor and was fill with his lot.He rationalized why he could n ot afford to live by middle class morals his needs were too much. Nevertheless, he was not going to stomach Mr. Higgins to take advantage of his nature. He appealed to what they had in common- their masculinity and their ability to reason. His tone of voice, gestures, body language and facial expression helped to ensure proper decryption of his message. In the end, he was able to impress Mr. Higgins with his natural gift of rhetoric e. g. Im willing to tell you, Im wanting to tell you, Im waiting to tell you. After explaining why he wanted money for his daughter, Mr.Higgins opinion of him changed from being a blackmailer to a philosophical genius. He later recommended him to lecture on morals as an original moralist. On the other hand, Mr. Higgins manner of speaking or way of encoding his message was so crude that he couldnt help but get a negative response. For example, when Eliza visited his home to request lessons, he was most insulting. He referred to her as piece of baggage , deliciously low-class, horribly dirty and a draggle-tail gutter snipe. Mr. Higginss harsh Sit down was a great contrast to Mr. Pickerings whats your name, dear would you sit down, Ms. Doolittle? Mr.Pickering succeeded in doing what Mr. Higgins could not do. He got Eliza to sit. Mr. Higgins speech reflected his feelings of superiority and personal bias against people who could not speak proper English. He obviously believed that Standard English i. e. the English of Shakespeare, Milton and the Bible was the only proper form of the language. Mr. Higgins also expressed some bias against women for whom he apparently had little pry (at least as a wife). He saw Eliza as Something, not as Someone with feelings. The intervention of Mr. Pickerings what do you want, my dear? , again got a positive response from Eliza.She wanted to learn to speak more genteel, in order to work as a lady in a flower shop. Elizas ignorance and immaturity were also barriers to proper decoding. Mr. Higgins ex trapolation of her offer of a shilling a lesson to 60 or 70 pounds from a millionaire, was interpreted as a request for 60 or 70 pounds. Since she knew that she could not afford to pay this huge sum, she became very upset. The use of figurative language was lost on Eliza when Mr. Higgins utter that the streets would be full of dead bodies of men fighting to marry her. She thought that he was a mad man and wanted nothing to do with him. These barriers, created twain by Mr.Higgins and Eliza, blocked the communication process between them so much, that by the time he was willing to accept the irresistible challenge, Eliza had made up her mental capacity to leave. His blatant attempt at manipulation forced the intervention of Mrs. Pearce and Mr. Pickering. The terms of their association were clarified to the satisfaction of Mrs. Pearce and later perhaps to Eliza, who still screamed that if she did not like it, she would leave. It has been noted that the most efficient communication t akes into account the social and intellectual features of both the speaker and the hearer (Simmons-Mc Donald).Mr. Doolittle certainly did that. He clearly understood himself, his audience (Mr. Higgins) and the social context (the class structure) in which he communicated his message. This made his method of communicating very effective. He also gave recognition to the premise that all communication involves a relationship, conscious or unconscious, between the speaker and the listener. He recognized the differences between Mr. Higgins and himself but appealed to the qualities they had in common.A relationship was established, helping to ensure the successful decoding of his message. In contrast, Mr. Higgins made no attempt to build any relationship with his audience (Eliza). He was arrogant and downright rude. He believed that people could change their class by learning to speak proper English. His message was good, but his coding was atrocious. This was principally, because he was very impersonal and totally ignored the feelings of his audience. The Case for Torture by Michael Levin, presents excellent justification for the single-valued function of torture in situations of extreme desperation. Levin gives great billets for the use of torture through clever wording and great exemplification. In supplement to the already great argument, he provides potential counter-arguments and proves why they are invalid. It is made very clear that he believes that torture is morally mandatory and makes great effort to sway the opinion of readers, provided they keep an open mind. Levin presents a great argument and presents the ideas in an organized fashion, but as with many essays, it is not without flaw and could use some minor changes to make this great essay into a in thinkable essay.The coif of the introduction of Levins essay is somewhat unusual. It begins with a few powerful statements, but the very first statement violates a rule of literature, inclusion of an single-handed fact. Levin says, It is by and large assumed that to rture is impermissible, a throwback to a more brutal age. Not only is the statement a generalization, he is saying that something is chiefly assumed, but he does not say whom it is assumed by. So who generally assumes it? It seems it is more of a mistake of wording because he is the unitary who is assuming that generally people think torture is molest, therefore the essay should read that way because the last thing one should do is start off on the wrong foot.The essay truly lacks any real lead-in or background. The essay just jumps right into the real issues without introducing them or explaining why it was even written in the first place. The reason for the essay is not the real issue though. The issue is that it lacks background because it doesnt appear that Levin is actually arguing against other point of view. croak I knew, an argument required two points of view to start with, but as I read the introduction it doesnt seem he has an hostile to win favor over. Without ques tion it is obvious that the paper is about torture, but the introduction does not asseverate the main ideas as clearly as it should introduce them.Upon reading the body of the essay, it also comes off as marginal. The paragraphs in the essay do not seem to flow together, but or else jump fromone point to the next. While the paragraphs may be about the same topic overall, the transition between minor points is somewhat abrupt and adds to the essays unfinished feel. Another point of interest is Levins inclusion of two subtitles however, the subtitles are not complete. The first subtitle reads, Death, but the following paragraph does not discuss death.With Death being the subtitle, it seems thats what the paragraph would be about. The next and last subtitle reads, Idealism, and accordingly that is what the following paragraph is about, but why does that paragraph gets a subtitle and the previous do not is a mystery because they are all about something different as they should be. It seems to be another oversight that also adds to the essays unfinished quality.Though the essay has its flaws, it is not without strong points. Levins great use of examples through hypothetical situations rattling brings the reader in and aids in his quest to change their point of view. The examples themselves do not make the essay however, its clear they are greatly assisted by the excellent use of vocabulary and clever wording. Levin does a great job of using powerful words, it makes the essay seem more credible and creates a feeling that the writer really knows what hes talking about. Why that may or may not be the case, it can be said that Levin really knows how to write a approximate persuasive argument however, his oversights deduct from what could be an incredible persuasive essay.The overall impression of the essay was good. It seemed the argument itself was well though out, but the actual writing itself was what most needed work. Without a doubt, Levins essay presents som e very valid facts and they are rather well supported in most cases however, to make a strong argument you need support on every level. Not only do all the facts need to be organized and well developed, but the writing does as well. As previously stated, it is clear that Levin really knows how to write a good persuasive argument however, his oversights deduct from what could be an incredible persuasive essay.
